Bring a Child You Love to the Library for Story Time

Parents, grandparents and any other caregivers of children age five years and under are invited to attend the library’s story time sessions with our youth services specialist, Melissa Bond. Story times are are filled with age appropriate picture books, finger plays, simple games and singing.

When you bring in your child(ren), remember to sign up for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, too! This program helps to prepare children for school by encouraging caregivers to read 1,000 books to the child before attending school. Does this sound daunting? It’s actually very manageable! If a single picture book is read aloud to a child beginning on their second birthday and ending on the child’s fifth birthday, the child will have listed to almost 1,100 books read aloud (1,095 to be exact)!

Some of the benefits of hearing books read out loud before attending school are:

*exposure to rich vocabulary

*exposure to a wide variety of concepts

*an understanding of how books work (we read from left to right, top to bottom)

*helps children to understand letters make up words that can be read and spoken

*exposure to correct grammatical form

*increases the child’s attention span

*healthy brain development

*increases curiosity and motivates a desire to learn more

*helps to develop empathy for others

*helps to spark imagination and creativity

Join Melissa for story time and, while your wee one is engaged, pick up some books you can borrow and share together at home!
