The Caldecott Medal recognizes the “most distinguished American picture book for children,” and is given out annually by the American Library Association. It is a prestigious honor, and Caldecott books are always objects of great beauty and skill.
Our Caldecott Challenge invites your children of any age to read (or have books read to them) 12 Caldecott Medal winners or honor books this summer. The Library’s Caldecott books are in a separate section of the library on the east wall near the Discovery Room.
To register your child(ren), find the blue cards on the low book case in the children’s section, fill out your child’s name and other information, and bring it to the loan desk. Take home a “Caldecott Challenge Reader’s Log” and check out some of our extensive collection of Caldecott books. If you have Caldecott winners (winning books feature a reproduction of the medal on the cover) in your home library, it’s fine to read those, too.
Return the log sheet to the library by August 10, and plan to attend our Caldecott ice cream party on August 13, where all readers will receive a prize.
Books for the Caldecott Challenge can also count toward our “Libraries Rock!” promotion, so your children can be eligible for small prizes and weekly drawings.
NOTE: You MUST register your child for the Caldecott Challenge by July 2.
