Where is Everything in the MPL?

In a recent post, we talked about how you would locate a book in the library’s online card catalog. Today, we want to show you where in the library you will find that book once you’ve gotten the call number from the catalog.

Here’s the floor plan of the Macedon Public Library (It’s not to scale, but gives you the rough location for all our materials):

You can see there is much more than just books here. For example, the Macedon Food Pantry offers groceries for those in need, while our privacy booth allows people to have private Zoom conferences with their health care providers or others. The Discovery Room offers toys and games for children, while the Idea Factory has our Glowforge and materials for makers.

As you walk into the library, books are on your left. New books are shelved near the circulation desk, while the main part of our collection is in a series of shelves that start near the Discovery Room.

Adult books are shelved in two ways. Fiction books are categorized alphabetically, starting with the author’s last name. Authors who have multiple books will be alphabetized by the name of each book within the author’s section.

For Non-fiction books, we use the venerable Dewey Decimal System to catalog them by subject matter. There are also separate sections for teen books, juvenile chapter books, and biographies.

Next week, we’ll take a closer look at the Dewey Decimal system to help you understand where you will find books on a broad range of topics. See you then!
