Did you know that Macedon Public Library offers resources and programs designed for our older patrons? Here are just a few of the events we are hosting in the near future that may interest you:
- Lunch and Learn: Effective Communication for Alzheimer’s Caregivers
- Thursday, May 25, noon-1 p.m.
Communication is more than just talking and listening – it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join us with your own bag lunch to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. Please register for this program here.
- Gerifit Exercise Program
- Every Friday, 10-11 a.m.
Wear loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes to enjoy a senior-focused workout that will help to improve your balance, strength, and flexibility. Gerifit and Vitality 4 Life are video-based programs. Light weights and stretch bands are integrated into the workout routine aimed at folks aged 50 and up. This is a great way to improve your physical fitness and meet new people. Check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise program. Classes are free and open to all and are held in the Community Room at the Library.
- Seniors Helping Seniors
- Fourth Friday of every month, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Are you a caregiver for someone who has Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia? Consider bringing your loved one to this program which gives seniors an opportunity to socialize while enjoying live music, sing-a-longs, chair exercises, crafts, and more. The program is free for all participants. Volunteers and two staff members run the program, which is sponsored by Lifespan and the Alzheimer’s Association. All staff and volunteers have been trained and passed a background check.
