Have you ever wondered about the dedicated library staffers who serve you? These individuals are all book lovers who are delighted to be able to help others in any way they can. In the coming weeks, we’ll profile the members of the Macedon Public Library so you can get to know the a little better. Today, we’ll start with someone that many of you already know: Julia Koberlein. We sat down with Julia recently to ask her a few questions. Here’s what she had to say:
How long have you worked at the library?
This is my tenth year working at the Macedon Public Library. I can’t believe it’s been that long!
Where are you from originally?
I’m from the Midwest, grew up outside of St. Louis, and attended college in Illinois and Connecticut. Since then I’ve also lived in North Carolina and Cuba (New York!) I loved Cuba’s little library.
What is your educational background?
Bachelor’s in English, minor in history. Master’s in medieval studies (focus was Old English literature and history, Latin, and philosophy) from UCONN. I’ve also received training in Waldorf educational theory and also training in the Orton-Gillingham approach for dyslexia.
What is your favorite thing about working at the library?
I enjoy seeing all the new books as they come in to the library, and I very much enjoy talking with patrons and helping them find books and information that excite them.
Name a favorite book or two. (good luck just naming a few…)
Gosh, my favorite from 2022 was Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, but that is totally against-type of the books I traditionally read. My favorite of all time is probably The Two Towers by J. R. R. Tolkien (the second book in The Fellowship series), tied with Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. Currently, I am enjoying Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan.
Do you have any pets?
Yes, I have two cats.
Why are libraries important for our community?
I think libraries are important because they are safe places for everyone. Libraries strive to provide for the entire community, and if there’s something you need, we will try to find it for you. I love working here because I love helping others.
What else would you like people to know about you?
Even though I’m working in the back room a lot currently, I’m always glad to say “Hi” and chat, or talk about books, or whatever. If you don’t see me out and about, feel free to ask for me at the front desk. Also, I think blowing bubbles is awesome! And the Stargate series is my favorite sci-fi show, although Firefly holds a soft spot in my heart.
