By giving blood, you may save a life—or several lives. Blood supplies are needed for surgical and emergency health needs, and the supply is currently critically low. If you’ve never given before, it’s easy! You’ll sign in, show ID, and be asked to read some information and answer a few questions. You’ll be escorted to a comfortable chair while a pint of blood is drawn, which takes only 8-10 minutes. After donating, you can enjoy a snack and drink until you’re ready to resume your day. The entire process takes about an hour.
That’s it: you’ll be on your way. But for your blood, the journey is just beginning. It will be taken to a processing center, and spun in a centrifuge to separate it into three components: red cells, platelets, and plasma. Each component is packaged, tested, and stored in a refrigerated space until it is shipped to a hospital as needed. Blood transfusions are used in a wide range of circumstances, from serious injuries such as a car crash, childbirth, cancer treatments, and more. The components in your pint of blood may be involved in three different life-saving procedures.
So stop by the library on November 26 and become a life-saving hero. There’s little cost to you—only an hour of your time—and it could mean the world to someone in need.
