Breaking the Dark
Meet Jessica Jones: Retired super hero, private investigator, loner. The morning a distraught mother comes into her office, Jessica would prefer to nurse her hangover and try to forget last night’s poor choices. But something about Amber Randall’s story strikes a chord with her. Amber is adamant that something happened to her teenage twins while they were visiting their father in the UK. Amber insists her children have been replaced by something horrible, something “perfect.” But Jessica knows that nothing in life is perfect. Even as she tries to buy into the idea that better days are ahead, Jessica Jones has seen all too clearly that behind every promise of perfection trails a dark, dangerous shadow.
The God of the Woods
When Barbara Van Laar is discovered missing from her summer camp bunk one morning in August 1975, it triggers a panicked, terrified search. Losing a camper is a horrific tragedy under any circumstances, but Barbara isn’t just any camper, she’s the daughter of the wealthy family who owns the camp—as well as the opulent nearby estate, and most of the land in sight. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared in this region: Barbara’s older brother also went missing 16 years earlier, never to be found. How could this have happened yet again?
The Cliffs
The crumbling Victorian had been abandoned long before Jane ever discovered it as a child. Inside was shambles. Still, the house became a hideaway whenever Jane needed to escape her volatile mother. Twenty years later, now a Harvard archivist, she returns home to Maine following the dissolution of her marriage and is horrified to find the Victorian is barely recognizable. A rich lady from Beacon Hill has gutted it, and in its place stands a glossy white mansion straight out of a shelter magazine. But the home’s new owner is unhappy. Her young son claims to have been speaking to the ghost of a child, and she keeps finding marbles on the floor. The woman hires Jane to research the land. The story Jane uncovers—of husbands lost at sea, wives mourning along the cliffs, historical artifacts stolen and sold, and, at the center of it all, a tale of colonialism—is as old as Maine itself.
