Seed Library Stocked

Are you a gardener? If so, the Macedon Public Library has numerous resources to help you out. In addition to a good collection of gardening books, the library is the location of the Macedon Seed Library. You’ll find it in a cabinet along the back wall of the library, near the Glowforge.

What is a seed library? Simply put, it’s a way to share seeds with eager gardeners. We’ve just restocked the Macedon Seed Library with envelopes full of vegetable and flower seeds—free for the taking. In return, we ask you to consider saving seeds yourself at the end of the growing season to share with others.

What’s the catch? There is none. We ask that you limit your takings to three envelopes a trip, to ensure that there is enough for everyone. If you want to share your own seeds at the library, there are two ways you can do this:

  • If you have leftover purchased seeds at the end of the season that you didn’t plant, consider bringing them in. Most seeds are viable for several years, so your un-needed seeds may be useful to someone else next year.
  • If you’ve planted open-pollinated plants (ie, not hybrids, which don’t come true to seed), try leaving a few to go to seed at the end of the growing season. That should give you enough both for your own needs next year with some extras to share. Place them in an envelope, label them with the name and any other relevant info (such as light requirements, watering needs, and so forth), and bring them in.

Whether your garden consists of acres of plants or just a pot on the back patio, you are welcome to take some seeds from the Seed Library to try them out—with no strings attached. We hope to see you at the library!
